Joomla has many components, plugins and modules that can be installed to make a website do some incrediible stuff; such as social media, podcasts, blogging and more. In some cases, the installations work ok from the beginning, or seem to work good from the beginning. But, often enough, there are so many hang-ups that make it necessary for the webmaster to dive into PHP, CSS, MYSQL database tables and javascript files. More often than not, most fixes occur in CSS stylesheets, PHP files and MYSQL.

If a web designer really wants to create and use components, plugins and modules for Joomla, PHP and MYSQL by Larry Ullman is almost a must-read. Before you make a committment to want to develope Joomla, Drupal, or Wordpress sites on a regular basis, browse through the book and see if learning this information is right for you. If you find trouble reading anything once, you may want to not make development an endeavor because many PHP and MYSQL topics need to be read over and over again to gain a basic understanding. Following the reading, much of the information will  be referenced indefinitely thereafter.

The only way to wing a Joomla installation is to install a template and hope it sets up properly. Chances are....it won't. Then, it could be safe to create a menu and content pages that would contain images and text, but nothing else. For a first timer, or even someone who plans to make a few extra bucks doing this, a job like this can be done in the $99-$300 range. Mastering this part of Joomla may take quite a while before the time for the money even comes anywhere close to a profit.

The comments above were not meant to be negative or positive, but just the plain truth. If you really want to progress at Joomla you should want to learn how to use PHP and MYSQL. It may seem like you are reading code without any real understanding, but, one day it will come together and you will reap the rewards. There are many good books that explain how to make a good Joomla website, but most are about how to use Joomla and what you can do with various components, plugins, modules, etc. Very few will tell you what to do when you are anxious to see a new feature and instead you see lines and lines of PHP errors.
